2022 Standardized Testing Update

Due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 on GRE testing, most Graduate Center programs are suspending their GRE requirements for 2022 applications (both Fall 2022 and, where applicable, Spring 2022 applications).

The following programs will continue with their regular GRE requirements for 2022:

  • Biochemistry (optional)
  • Business
  • Chemistry (optional)
  • Computer Science
  • Economics
  • Mathematics (General GRE is required; however, the Subject Test requirement is suspended)
  • Physics (General GRE is required; however, the Subject Test is optional)

All other programs that usually require GRE scores will be suspending them. Each program’s admissions committee may request additional writing samples or interviews as an alternative means of assessing your qualifications. If you have already taken the exam, you may upload your scores as usual.

TOEFL and IELTS requirements are not suspended.

Please check our deadline and requirements chart for a complete list of program requirements. Contact us in the Office of Admissions with any questions you have about testing, or anything else as you consider your graduate school options.

      Hello Maria,

It depends: which Ph.D. program are you considering? As noted in this blog post, the majority of our programs (including Ph.D. programs) are suspending the GRE for those applying to start a program in 2022. But if you tell us which specific program you are considering I can confirm for you.

      Thank you!

        Dear Mr. Martini,

Do I have the chance to apply for PHD in Urban Education to start Fall 2021.
        Thanks for your answer. Best!

          Good morning Maria,

I’m very sorry, but the deadline is long past for Fall 2021 applications. If you would like to apply for Fall 2022 the Urban Education application deadline is December 15th.

          Thank you.

      Hello Sara,

While we have been having more online and hybrid course options during COVID, we do not anticipate those GC programs being available online as things normalize after COVID–they are in-person programs.

Thank you and please let us know if we can help with anything else.

    Hello,

I hope this message finds you well. I am wondering if applications for Speech Language Pathology and Audiology programs (graduate level) will also be impacted by the adoption of this new policy? Please advise and thank you kindly for reading this message.

    Sincerely,
    SB

      Good morning Stanley,

The Graduate Center’s Audology (Au.D.) and Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences (Ph.D.) have both suspended their GRE requirements for Fall 2022 applicants.

      Thank you.

Do you have plans for extending a Hybrid model in the future, with a combination of in person and online classes, for a full time PHD program in computer science?

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Hello,

Yes, that PhD program is actually a Graduate Center program (though housed at John Jay) so this announcement applies for it as well. So yes, the GRE is suspended for Criminal Justice’s Fall 2022 applicants.

      Thank you.
      -Gerry, Office of Admissions.

    Hey Gerry!

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if the GRE would be required for the Cognitive Neuroscience Master’s Program? Hope to hear back!

Considering this pandemic period, do I need to submit both GRE and TOEFL/IELTS test scores before enrolling into the PhD Computer Science Program ?

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Hello Abubakar,

The TOEFL/IELTS is not suspended for any program, and Computer Science is maintaining their GRE requirement. So I’m sorry but yes, you do still need both to apply for the Computer Science program.

      Thank you.

I would like to know if I can apply to Program in International Migration Studies for fall 2022. The deadline is April 2022?

      Hello Sari,

There is no Spring entry for Ph.D. programs, so the next semester you could apply for is Fall 2022. Physics continues to require the main GRE test, however the subject test will be optional.

      Thank you.

I wonder if MPP is considering suspension of 2021 TOEFl test requirements due to the impact of COVID-19 or if the waiver is eligible for offer holders with bachelor’s degree in English Language and Literature (four years-undergraduate degree) or Master’s degree in PA and Economic. (Two years) taught in English in a non-English speaking country.

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Hello Mariam,

We do not have an MPP degree at The Graduate Center, though our Political Science program does have a Public Policy specialization: https://politicalscience.commons.gc.cuny.edu/public-policy/ Please let us know Admissions@gc.cuny.edu if we can answer any questions on it.

You would be exempt from a TOEFL/IELTS exam if your bachelor’s or master’s degrees are from one of the countries listed here: https://www.gc.cuny.edu/CUNY_GC/media/CUNY-Graduate-Center/PDF/Admissions/English-language-testing-exempt-countries.pdf

      Thank you.

  6. Prativa Kaspal

    Dear Sir,
    Warm greetings !

I hope my email finds you in good health.

I wonder if GRE is optional for PhD program in Earth and Environmental science that has the deadline 15th Dec 2021.

    Thank you.

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Hello Ravnit,

The Graduate Center does not have an MPH program–you would need to contact the CUNY School of Public Health for any inquiries about that program.

      Thank you.

  7. Stacey

    Hello!

Are we allowed to apply to two different PhD program types at the same time? For example, psychology and sociology for fall 2022? Or is it only one?

      1. Stacey

Thank you for your response! To clarify by only one program, does that mean the program field? For instance for psychology, would that count as one and I can apply to multiple PhD programs under psychology? Or I can only apply to one specific program in general?

        1. Gerry Martini Post author

          Hello Stacey,

I’m sorry but no, you may not apply to multiple subfields in Psychology–you should apply to the one the best fits your research interests.

          Thank you.
          -Gerry, Office of Admissions

      Hello Daisy,

The Graduate Center does not have an Early Childhood Education program. You should contact the CUNY schools that have that program for details about their requirements.

      Thank you.
      -Gerry, Office of Admissions

  8. Celia

    Good morning !

Can you, please, confirm that we do not need to take any GRE test for the Chemistry Ph.D program in 2022 ?

Thank you very much for your answer.

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Good morning Sanket,

I cannot give you information for all MS programs in the USA, just for those of them at our school. No MS at The Graduate Center will require the GRE for Fall 2022.

For any other school and programs that you are interested in, you will need to check with them each individually.

      Thank you.
      -Gerry, Office of Admissions

  9. Martin

Hi, For the Computer Science PhD program, does this require only a General GRE test -or is a subject test required as well? If so, which GRE subject test would that be? Thanks.

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Good morning Lydia,

It means an applicant can provide GRE scores or can decide not too. As it is optional, it will not be held against you if you do not provide it; however if someone does take it, and gets a good score, that can be positive for their application.

      Thank you.
      -Gerry, Office of Admissions
