GRE + TOEFL/IELTS Testing and Graduate Center Master’s Programs

GRE: As testing centers around the world are shut down because of COVID-19, some Graduate Center master’s programs that normally require GRE scores to apply for admission are going to temporarily waive this requirement. These programs are Classics, Cognitive Neuroscience, Data Science, International Migration Studies, Nanoscience, Philosophy, Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences, and Women’s and Gender Studies. For Fall 2020 applicants only, these programs join Data Analysis and Visualization, Digital Humanities, Liberal Studies, and Middle Eastern Studies in not requiring the GRE. The program’s admissions committee may request additional writing samples or interviews as an alternative means of assessing your qualifications. If you have already taken this exam, please upload your scores as usual as it will help the committee review your application.

TOEFL/IELTS: Any Fall 2020 applicant who has not yet taken either the TOEFL or IELTS English language exams are encouraged to submit all other application materials. The program’s admissions committee may request additional writing samples or interviews as an alternative means of assessing your qualifications. If you have already taken one of these exams, please upload your scores as usual as it will help the committee review your application.

See our complete list of deadlines and requirements here. We will update this page as more information about testing requirements becomes available. Please contact the Office of Admissions with any questions.

I am a prospective Fall 2021 PhD applicant of the CUNY Graduate Center Mathematics Department from India. As per the current situation here, it’s very difficult for me to take the GRE General and TOEFL tests from a center due to surge in Covid-19 cases. Although ETS has come up with GRE General and TOEFL Home Tests within 30th September, 2020, it won’t be possible for me to take both these exams from home due to lack of proper equipments. As per mentioned above, TOEFL maybe replaced by assessments or interviews which shall work for me. But I don’t know what shall I do for the General GRE. Can you please help me out with my query as in whether General GRE can be waived or not?

      Hello Aritram,

I’m sorry, but Mathematics is one of the programs that is still going to require the general GRE. However, they have decided to suspend their requirement for the GRE subject test, so at least that is one less test that you need to take. You can read more about this year’s standardized testing here: https://admissions.commons.gc.cuny.edu/2020/07/06/2021-standardized-testing-update/

Please contact us at admissions@gc.cuny.edu with any further questions.

Good morning Tania. We can only speak for ourselves as one school within CUNY–not for all of CUNY–so you need to reach out to the specific CUNY school that you are interested in the MSED at to ask them directly. Thank you.

Good afternoon. There is no Speech Pathology master’s program here at The Graduate Center. Within CUNY that master’s program is located at Hunter, Queens, and Brooklyn Colleges. You would need to check with those schools to see their requirements. Thank you and have a nice rest of your day.

There are no “minimum” scores because your application is considered in totality–if you are stronger in some areas sometimes you can compensate for being weaker in others. With that said, I would generally try and aim for a 7 or so. Thank you.

Good morning, The Graduate Center does not take Doulingo. I would encourage you to complete your application without the TOEFL or IELTS for now, and the program can work with you on getting English assessment going forward. Thank you! Good morning, Digital Humanities never requires a GRE, so please do not worry about taking the exam. (Please note though that you would now be applying to Fall 2021, not Spring 2021.) Thank you!

    Good Evening,

Would anyone happen to know if there been any updates in the GRE requirements for the Linguistics Ph.D. application? I would be applying in Fall 2021, for the Fall 2022 semester.

    Thank you in advance.

Hello, I am a prospective fall 2022 applicant for Ph.D. in English Literature. Can anyone please let me know that if I need to send my TOEFL score to the graduate school directly through ETS while applying. Hoping to get a reply soon. Thank you in advanced.

    1. Gerry Martini Post author

      Good morning Adrija,

Yes, please send us your TOEFL score unless you have a bachelor’s degree or higher from one of these countries: https://www.gc.cuny.edu/CUNY_GC/media/CUNY-Graduate-Center/PDF/Admissions/English-language-testing-exempt-countries.pdf

The school code for The Graduate Center is 2113. When you fill out the application, you can simply scan a copy of your student scores when it asks for them.

      Thank you.

    Hi! Gerry Martini,

Is GRE required for Ph.D. in Physics Jan2022 admission?
IF yes, which one is required (General or Subject ) or both?

Also, what IELTS score is required for full consideration for a Ph.D. program in physics?

    Thank you.
